Renato
Percan
was born in 1936 in Trget, Labin region. In 1966 he graduated from the
Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb, in the class of Professor Albert Kinert.
In
the period between 1967 and 1972 he worked as art teacher in the
elementary school in Medulin and in Gymnasium for students of
pedagogical curriculum in Pula.
In
1978 Renato Percan became a member of the Croatian Freelance Artists’
Association [‘Hrvatska zajednica samostalnih umjetnika – HZSU’],
and since then painting and decorating became the walk of his life.
Renato Percan exhibited at numerous one-man and group exhibitions in
Croatia and abroad. He received 20 prizes and awards for his work.
An
artistic giant of enormous spiritual power populated the world with
uncounted marvellous creatures of his imagination.
In transforming
imagination into reality, Percan is overwhelmed with passion. As every
other genuine creator he does not pander the taste and expectations of
the audience, but he follows his own inner spiritual direction in
shaping the cultural landscape, opening our view toward a new and
marvellous world created by the painter.
Two monographs on
Renato Percan and his work have been published:
-
Depolo, Josip
(1997.), Renato Percan – trideset stvaralačkih godina,
1966.-1996., Buzet: Reprezent, (preface by Tonko Maroević)

Renato Percan is today certainly “the most surrealistic” painter, unlike
many artists of the same trend he is a masterfully perfect drawer, which
is one of the basic prerequisites in “reading” a surrealistic message.
His narration is
correct and comprehensible, it is a “journalistic” language of Kafka
expressed by the purest art quality. The enigma in his work is not
hidden in the art materia, it is revealed from the “veristic” expression,
behind the screen of “literature”, whereas his art does not lose any of
its artistic qualities... which undoubtedly confirms a painter who
articulates his drawing voice with no need to hide behind obscurity.
... without
restraint he demonstrates high levels of his metier perfection, his
impressive masterly skills of a drawer...
...
Renato Percan does not only disclose a perfectionist, a drawer of long
and patient preparations, but he is also a promoter of the new
surrealism... He is infallible in applying all rules of drawing; he is
always trying to reach a margin of possible by pencil and ink and often
courageously surpasses it, surprising us by what is well beyond usual
drawing standards…
